  As a newcomer to the metro area, one of  your top priorities may be that of your childs education.  Louisville has many options from which to choose.  Should you not find what you need, simply e-mail us and we will try to get you the information that you need.
 
Jefferson County 
Public Schools

    With more than 97,000 students enrolled in integrated schools, the Jefferson County Public School District is the 26th largest in the United States. 
    Students attend one of 87 elementary schools, 22 middle schools, 19 high schools, and a variety of specialized locations.  The grade structure places kindergarten through 5 in elementary school, grades 6 throuogh 8 in middle school, and grades 9 through 12 in high school.
    In general, school hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. for elementary schools and 7:35 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. for middle and high schools.
    District wide the student/teacher ratio is approximately 17:1.  More than 80% of District teachers hold master's degrees or above.

     SAT and ACT  scores show that Jefferson County Public School's student score well when compared with national median scores and with districts throughout Kentucky.  District wide, each year nearly 60% of the graduates continue their education in college or advanced training.

     The District  is committed to providing students a comprehensive academic program with emphasis in reading and mathematics.
 

    Elementary schools are are organized into the Primary Program(K-3) and the Intermediate Program (grades 4 and 5).  The Primary Program offers a flexible, multi-age enviroment in which students learn in ways and at a pace which meets their individual needs, interests and abilities.  Children in elementary school study basic skill subjects - language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, art, music, library skills and computer skills.

    Middle schools are organized into interdisciplinary teams through which teachers coordinate basic skills instruction in language arts, math, science and social studies.  In addition, related arts courses are offered including art, band, chorus, foreign language, general music, home economics, orchestra, physical education and technical education.

Optional Programs

    The Jefferson County Public Schools offer a variety of other programs designed to meet specific needs of students.  Some programs are included here.

    The District's Advance Program offers gifted students in grade 4-12 an opportunity to learn at an accelerated level.  The District offers enrichment to informally indentified students in K-3 through the Advance Programm talent pool.

    The Honors Program offers an enhanced college prepatory program to students in middle and high school.

    Career Development/Technical Education is offered through Magnet Ceenter Academies in which students meet acdemic graduation requirements and specialize in programs such as medical careers, child care, business entrepreneurship, printing/publishing, chemical/plastics, urban agrisscience, aautomated manufacturing technologies, hospitality technology and many more.

    The J. Graham Brown School, an open, supportive environment school with grades K-12, offers students an innovative cross-age learning program.

    duPont Manual - The Magnet High School offers a college preparatory program with special direction in the areas of Visual Arts; High School/University Academic Center, Communications./Media Arts; and Mathematics, Science and Technology.
 
 

Child Care

    There are numerous quality child care facilities throughout the Louisville/Jefferson County area.  As most newcomers find, however, locating just the right one is not always easy.  With this in mind, the Community Coordinated Child Care (4-C's) was created. 

    A private non-profit Metro United Way agency, 4-C's provides parents with lists of licensed child care facilities, both private and public, according to the zip codes that are requested.

Catholic Schools

    With almost 24,000 students, the Archdioceses of Louisville is the third largest school distrct in the state of Kentucky.  In Jefferson County, 19 percent of school age children are enrolled in a Catholic school.  The strength in numbers reveals the commitment of a large segment of this community to Catholic education.  Inspired by this commitment, Catholic school educators dedicate themselves to giving their best every day, and to making the schools the best they can be.

    Teaching the essential skills in language arets, math, library skills, the sciences, fine arts and computer applications is the backbone of the curriculum.  But the Catholic elemntary and high schools go beyond instruction in the basics.  Their philosophy of education emphasizes the development of the total person in a Christ centered environment.

   The Oldham Coounty Public School System has approximately 9,300 students in integrated schools.  The District is comprised of 2 pre-schools, 7 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 high schools.  The grade structure places kindergarten through grade 5 in elementary school, grade 6 through 8 in middle school and grades 9 through 12 in high school.
